Armed suspect in Santa Clara assault taken into custody, road reopens after police activity

( KRON ) – A domestic disturbance was reported Saturday morning near the 1000 block of Kiely Boulevard, the Santa Clara Police Department said. The incident led to a police shooting.

Officers were told that a suspect had assaulted a family member and then ran away from their home.

The suspect was armed with several knives when he left, according to SCPD. Police located the suspect who was still in the vicinity. Still armed with knives, the suspect did not comply with officers’ commands to drop them.

Police used de-escalation tactics that did not work. SCPD deployed less lethal devices to detain the suspect, which still didn’t work. Finally, an SCPD officer fired one round at the suspect. The bullet did not hit the suspect. However, he was ultimately taken into custody after a brief struggle, according to SCPD.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. He remains in police custody, SCPD said. The suspect was identified as Anthony Hernandez, 20, of Santa Clara. His charges are currently pending.
