If you see smoke rising off Angel Island this week, take a breath before dialing 911. It’s supposed to be there.
California State Parks, working with Cal Fire and the Marin County Fire Department, plans to burn up to 260 acres of grassland and coastal scrub on Angel Island starting as soon as Tuesday, September 8, with operations potentially continuing through the week as conditions allow.
At roughly one square mile, Angel Island is the largest island in San Francisco Bay, and its smoke column will be visible across the region between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on active burn days.
