From Broughton Street to statewide legacy, Georgia’s oldest music retailer celebrates 90 years in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – A longtime Savannah business with deep roots in the local music community is celebrating a historic milestone.

Portman’s Music Superstore is celebrating 90 years in business in 2026 as Georgia’s oldest continuously operated music retailer. Founded in downtown Savannah in 1936, the family’s music roots trace back to 1910, when Sam Portman sold instruments on Broughton Street. Today, the company serves the region with locations in Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick and Albany.
