Tuesday storms just the beginning of a wet few weeks

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A band of storms will move through the ArkLaTex on Tuesday afternoon and evening. These storms will likely bring some strong winds and will mark the beginning of one of the wettest periods of weather we’ve seen in months.

Storm Timing: The latest run of the HRRR model below shows the progress of today’s storms. They will likely move through the area during the rest of this Tuesday afternoon and then move out of the area shortly after sunset. SPC has lowered its risk forecast for the ArkLaTex today. It now indicates that we will see a marginal severe weather risk today. That means that any wind issues caused by today’s storms will be isolated.

Wind gusts: Below is the latest hourly update from the HRRR models showing potential wind gusts. The strongest storms will produce gusts of 30 to 50 mph. Again, an isolated gust to 60 mph will be possible. Orange on this map indicates gusts of at least 35 mph. Reds are gusts of 40 to 50, and browns are gusts of 50 to over 60 mph.

This is just the beginning: Today’s storms are just the start of what could be two weeks of on-and-off stormy weather in the ArkLaTex. The good news is that it still doesn’t appear as if we will see too many issues with severe weather after today. Models suggest that severe weather will be possible at times, but any issues caused by the storms should be rather isolated. Eventually, our main worry could result from getting too much rain. The Blend of Models continues to show that all of the area will get more than a month’s worth of rain in the next ten days. It shows that all of the area will receive at least six inches. Parts of the area could see over eight inches. This will double the amount of rain that most locations have seen since the beginning of March.

Extended outlook: Don’t expect to see much sunshine for the rest of this week and all of next week. Despite the lack of sun and all of the anticipated rain, temperatures will stay warm. Daytime highs will likely settle in the low to middle 80s over the next few weeks. Overnight lows will mainly be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. If you have some outdoor plans for the Memorial Day weekend, you may need to prepare for the possibility of rain.
