SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The fireworks may be over, but local animal rescue organizations say the holiday’s impact on pets can last well beyond the Fourth of July.
Rescuers across the Springfield area say they see an increase in reports of lost dogs and cats every year after Independence Day, as loud fireworks frighten animals and cause many to run away from home.
“We always see an uptick,” said Marcy Bowling, executive director of Watching Over Whiskers. “A lot of people don’t anticipate and plan for taking their dogs on leashes… leaving your cats inside… and that can result in a lot of lost cats.”…
