Springfield restaurant offers meals to those who need – or want – them with ticket board

This week in Springfield-area food news: A local restaurant starts a leave-a-meal, take-a-meal board, a Lao food truck opens, and a downtown pub prepares to move.

Brunch Box launches leave-a-meal, take-a-meal board

Brunch Box, 211 E. Walnut St., has launched started a leave-a-meal, take-a-meal board. According to owner Rachel Fair, the board was inspired by a similar effort she’d read about in the United Kingdom.

When customers purchase their meals, they have the opportunity to purchase an additional meal and then add the receipt to a board in the store. Anyone can come in, grab a receipt and bring it up to the counter. Fair’s own experiences with food insecurity made it imperative that the process was simple.

“Here I am, asking everybody not to be ashamed” to use the board, Fair said. “I know how I felt when I was in school. I know that for me it was easier to be hungry than to be embarrassed or made fun of or to go through the rigmarole” of getting lunch or breakfast at school.
