‘Completely Selfless’ Maryland Woman Donates Life-Saving Organ to Her 71-Year-Old Mom – Twice

Before Julia Harlin’s daughter donated a part of her liver and her kidney to her, Harlin would undergo stomach pumps up to twice a week

A Maryland woman underwent two separate organ donation surgeries 16 months apart to save her 71-year-old mom, in a move that doctors are praising as a “completely selfless” act, according to a report.

Fox News Digital reported that Eileen Harlin, 39, got a portion of her liver removed in August 2022 to help her mom with a serious liver disease and then got one of her kidneys taken out this past December after her mom began experiencing kidney failure.

Her mom, Julia, was diagnosed with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhosis (NASH), which, according to the Mayo Clinic , is a disease that causes swelling and damage in the liver. If untreated, it can lead to liver scarring and liver cancer.

Eileen said she didn’t want her mom to wait for a deceased donor who matched her blood type. Waiting for a kidney alone could take up to 10 years, said Dr. Daniel Maluf, a transplant surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, where Julia got the surgeries.
