Local St. Catherine University Alumna, Erin Murphy, Steps into Role as Minnesota Senate Majority Leader

Erin Murphy MAOL ’05, a St. Catherine University alumna and Minnesota State Senator, has been chosen as the majority leader by the DFL party. This comes after Senator Kari Dziedzic decided to step down. Murphy will begin her role as majority leader on Monday, February 12, aligning with the 2024 legislative session’s start.

Murphy has extensive political experience, with 12 years in the Minnesota House of Representatives. She first secured a House seat in 2006 and was re-elected to represent District 64A in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014. Murphy also ran for governor in 2018, alongside her legislative duties.

After earning her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership in 2005, Murphy has stayed connected with St. Catherine University. In 2018, she gave the keynote speech at the winter Commencement. She has also worked as an adjunct nursing professor, interacting with students in various settings.

Murphy’s experience in healthcare and politics has influenced her student interactions. She has urged more women to think about running for office, highlighting the importance of diverse representation in politics.
