Flooding Shuts Down Major NJ Roads

Flooding forced the closure of several major New Jersey highways Saturday afternoon, July 18, snarling traffic and creating delays across the state, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Statewide Traffic Management Center.

Among the most significant closures as of 1:15 p.m.:

  • Interstate 280 is closed in both directions east of Exit 16E (Essex Street) in Harrison due to flooding.
  • US 1&9 Truck Route is closed in both directions at the Pulaski Skyway in Newark because of flooding.
  • Route 440 is closed in both directions north of Danforth Avenue in Jersey City due to flooding.
  • Route 57 is closed in both directions west of Hazen Road in Mansfield Township and west of North Prospect Street in Washington Township because of flooding.
  • Interstate 287 is closed in both directions north of Exit 14 (US 22) in Bridgewater Township due to flooding.

Other impacts include:

  • One lane closed on I-287 southbound at Exit 10 (CR 527/Easton Avenue) in Franklin Township because of flooding.
  • Flooding on the I-78 local lanes westbound near Exit 51 (Burnett Avenue) in Union Township.
  • A lane closure on the Garden State Parkway northbound south of Exit 143C (Route 124) in Irvington due to flooding.
  • Flooding on the New Jersey Turnpike Hudson County Extension outside Interchange 14A in Jersey City, where the Avenue E ramp is flooded.
  • A ramp lane closure on I-80 westbound at Exit 35 (Mount Hope Avenue) in Rockaway Township.
  • A ramp lane closure on Route 10 eastbound near Algonquin Parkway in Hanover Township.

Drivers are also facing additional delays from a crash with injuries on the US 1&9 Truck Route northbound at the Hackensack River Drawbridge in Kearny/Jersey City and a disabled vehicle on the Garden State Parkway northbound near Exit 143C in Irvington…
