Antioch Street Horror: Woman Thrown From Car Dies After Solo Crash

A 51-year-old Antioch woman died today after she was thrown from her car in a single-vehicle crash at G Street and Drake Street, according to police. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Antioch officers responded to reports of the solo crash and said early indications point to speed and possible impairment as factors, as reported by KRON4. The department’s traffic investigators have taken over the case and are working to determine exactly how the collision unfolded. Officials have not released any additional details.

Why Ejections Are So Deadly

Being thrown from a vehicle sharply increases the risk of catastrophic injury or death. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that occupants ejected in non-rollover crashes are nearly twice as likely to die, and those ejected in rollovers are about four times more likely to be killed, based on federal crash data. IIHS stresses that seat belts are critical in preventing ejection.

NHTSA’s 2023 occupant-protection report similarly found that the vast majority of people totally ejected in fatal crashes do not survive, and that proper restraint use dramatically cuts the chance of being thrown from a vehicle, underscoring how crucial seat belts are in crashes like this (NHTSA).

Investigation and How to Help

The Antioch Police Department’s Traffic Unit is asking anyone who saw the crash or has video of the area to contact Traffic Officer James Desiderio at 925-331-7474 or [email protected], according to KRON4. No arrests have been announced, and the investigation is ongoing…
