F-M school board member asks state to investigate district’s secret hiring of PR firm

Manlius, N.Y. -A longtime Fayetteville-Manlius school board member is asking the state comptroller to investigate whether her fellow board members skirted their own policies and state law when they secretly hired a public relations firm last year.

Marissa Mims, who was first elected to the school board in 2009, wants the state comptroller’s office to look into the board’s decision to bill $20,000 for an outside communications consultant through its lawyers, rather than seeking bids from competitors and approving the spending with a public vote.

Mims sent an email Monday with the complaint to the state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office and copied each of her fellow board members. His office confirmed receiving the complaint. F-M’s board president also confirmed to syracuse.com the board received copies…
