Public transit is changing in Syracuse, Centro holds final meeting for Better Bus Onondaga

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Three years after the initial proposal, and more than 20 years with no changes, community members said they’re feeling good about the re-design of Centro’s public bus transportation routes.

On Thursday, the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority hosted the final public hearing for the near-complete, re-design of Centro’s bus route plan for communities in Syracuse and neighboring residential areas.

Called the Better Bus Onondaga Initiative, the plan aims to improve efficiency for existing bus routes, propose new service lines, and discontinue low performing or unused routes.

Most notably, Centro is proposing three new “move” zones just outside the City. Within these zones, there is no fixed transportation schedule, but rather a flexible day-to-day service for neighbors with the Centro bus app. Through the app, people can reserve a ride between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
