New LeMay Exhibit Celebrating Industry Legend

Tacoma’s LeMay – America’s Car Museum has announced plans to open an exhibit highlighting the achievements of Charlie Wiggins, a driver, mechanic, innovator, and four-time Gold & Glory champion.

The “For Gold & Glory” exhibit will officially open at 10 a.m. on Sept. 19. The public debut will coincide with Family STEAM Day, which will offer free admission to visitors 18 and under; Avants Wagonfest on the museum field; public exhibition programming; and a performance in the exhibition by a local high school jazz band.

Ed Welburn, former vice president of global design at General Motors, is the guest curator. The exhibition traces Wiggins’ life and racing career within the context of Indiana Avenue and the Gold & Glory Sweepstakes. Through historical artifacts, imagery, sound, automotive design, and immersive interpretation, visitors can learn about Wiggins’ achievements and the barriers Black racers faced in segregated America, according to a museum press release…
