Jury weighs fate of off-duty security guard in deadly shooting of Renton teen

RENTON, Wash. — A jury is now tasked with deciding whether an off-duty security guard is guilty of murdering a teenager he mistakenly believed was armed with a real gun.

Aaron Myers is charged in the 2024 death of 17-year-old Hazrat Ali Rohani outside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Renton. According to court testimony, Rohani and two other teens had gone to the store to get help with their BB guns. Myers, however, has said he believed the teens were carrying real weapons and were about to commit a crime.

Prosecutors argue Myers acted on assumptions and unnecessarily escalated the situation, ultimately shooting Rohani seven times, six of those shots in the victim’s back. His defense team maintains Myers responded to what he perceived as an immediate threat…
