We the People: Toledo jazz band keeps tradition alive for nearly 60 years

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) -A living room jam session brings together history and music for the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band, a group with Toledo roots stretching back nearly six decades.

Raymond Heitger started playing clarinet at 19 without formal training while pursuing a career in mathematics. After moving to Toledo in the mid-1960s, he formed the original Cakewalkin’ Jass Band.

“We started out as a four-piece group, piano, drums, banjo, clarinet. Played our first gig at the Pawnee Bar in 1967,” Heitger said…
