Lucas County commissioners reject alternative jail modernization study

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Lucas County commissioners voted 2-1 not to study an alternative plan for jail repairs and modernization. Only life and safety fixes are planned as the sheriff plans to keep fighting to do things differently.

The sheriff was hoping the commissioners would at least study a more open concept, something that would require fewer corrections officers. Two of the commissioners wanted more concrete plans before even voting to study the plan.

A few weeks ago, commissioners voted to hire a construction manager and only address life and safety issues. Then they got a memo talking about a small sample to pay for a more open concept. The sheriff asked commissioners to ask consultants to study that further, but in a 2-1 vote they decided to hold off on that study…
