The Lucas County jail is in a state of disrepair because the county budget is in a state of despair. Blade reporter Chantal Eulenstein detailed the long slide into dangerous and decrepit conditions at the jail in a front page Sunday story.
Despite years of water damage eroding the jail’s foundation, many mechanized systems that no longer function, and pipes that leak or sometimes burst with water or raw sewage, the county intends to spend $63 million on repairs to keep the jail functioning another 30 years.
