Americana artist Rose Gerber came up with the idea of a protest song showcase after the 2025 election as a way to motivate herself to move forward and use music to “keep fighting the good fight.” Now in its third installment, Songs of Power and Protest brings 12 songwriters to the Showdown’s stage on Friday where they’ll each perform an original protest song and cover a favorite protest tune. I’m looking forward to hearing from singer-songwriter Arran Fagan, Midwest-raised Americana artist Barna Howard, and Annie Bethancourt, who has backed artists like Jewel and Sarah McLachlan and performed at Newport Folk Fest and NPR’s Tiny Desk.
