‘Everybody was punching everybody’: Trial begins in deadly Mount Trashmore shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — More than two years after a 15-year-old was shot and killed at the entrance of a parking lot at Mount Trashmore, attorneys do not seem to know the “why” behind the fight proceeding the gunfire.

The admission was made Wednesday during opening statements of the trial of Markal Cook, 21, who has been charged with second-degree murder in the May 25, 2024 death of Jeyani Upshur.

Mount Trashmore shooting charges certified to grand jury

David Talmage, an assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Virginia Beach, told a jury it’s “unknown” what led to the fist fight that Upshur became caught in the middle of. He also added that Cook was initially identified as victim number two as he also was shot.

Defense Attorney James Broccoletti repeated similar facts in his opening remarks, while adding Cook had no motive to kill Upshur.
