VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — If you’ve happened to venture into the ocean recently, you may have noticed the water being a little warmer. You’re not the only one.
“We have a lot of guests come in and ask about the warm waters and global warming and how that impacts a species off of our coast, and actually, there is quite a bit of change in the summertime and in the warmer waters,” said Steve Lacy with the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. “Animals like sharks really depend on colder waters, and warmer waters, they become a little bit more metabolically active. They want to eat a lot more. And of course, warmer waters don’t hold as much oxygen, so they have to find a balance between some of those warmer waters closer to the shore and colder waters off the shore.”
They’re not the only ones seeing it…
