A look at the driest months ever recorded in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. — If it’s felt unusually dry at times, history shows just how extreme the lack of rainfall can be in Norfolk.

Looking back at climate records, the five driest months on record highlight just how little rain can fall over an entire month. Leading the list is October 2000, which recorded just 0.01 inches of rainfall. That’s nearly unheard of, especially considering October typically averages around 3.86 inches of rain. In other words, that month saw only a tiny fraction of what is considered normal.

The second driest month came in November 2001, with only 0.08 inches of rain. Not far behind is September 1884, which recorded just 0.17 inches…
