3 indicted in $1.6M retail theft ring spanning multiple cities

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Three people were indicted following an investigation into a multi-city retail theft ring which totaled over $1.6 million in losses, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Police revealed the investigation begin on Jan. 17, 2024, after a high-value theft occurred at a Virginia Beach Walmart and an undisclosed location in Norfolk within 30 minutes. Suspects bypassed secured electronics cages to steal approximately $40,000 in Apple products and gaming consoles.

Through forensic evidence, Alexander Newman, 24, of Chesapeake was identified. Walmart’s regional investigators linked Newman to Tony McClease, 35, of Norfolk.

The investigation unveiled a systematic pattern of thefts which dated back to December 2023 and spanned multiple jurisdictions, including Roxboro, Yorktown, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Henrico County…
