Too hot to trot: The hidden danger of hot pavement for pets

NORFOLK, Va. — As temperatures climb this week, it’s not just people feeling the heat; your pets are, too. And one of the biggest hidden dangers during hot weather is scorching pavement temperatures.

Even when the air temperature feels manageable, asphalt and concrete can become much hotter under direct sunshine. For example, when the air temperature reaches 85 degrees, asphalt can heat up to around 130 degrees. At 90 degrees outside, asphalt temperatures can soar to nearly 140 degrees. And if we climb into the mid-90s, pavement temperatures can approach a blistering 155 degrees.

Concrete also heats up significantly, reaching around 140 degrees when the air temperature is near 95 degrees…
