‘Jubilation’ for piece of history brought back to life in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A beautiful new fountain is taking shape in downtown Portsmouth.

This new water feature, located in the roundabout in front of the Portsmouth Pavilion, will be a centerpiece for part of the new redevelopment along the Elizabeth River. And there’s also ‘Jubilation’ for the fountain, with a nearly 40-year-old statue that has been relocated from a once iconic spot in the city.

It used to stand front and center, right on Willett Drive in Portsmouth, where locals described coming to the gathering place at Willett Hall, the home to “fantastic concerts.”

That’s until the 1,900-seat performing arts center started deteriating through the years, and was eventually demolished six years ago. What was once a prominent place for Portsmouth, now gone, all the memories left fading in the distance.
