VDH asks families to take safe swimming pledge to prevent accidental drownings

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – 20 seconds in the water, that’s all it takes for a child to be at risk of drowning. According to the Virginia Department of Health, there’s “no splashing. No yelling. No warning. It happens quickly, quietly, and it can happen to anyone.”

As we approach the summer and folks start heading to the water to cool off, there are things to keep in mind that could be the difference in saving a life.

According to VDH, 2025 saw the highest number of accidental drownings for young children in the past six years.  With 12 total drownings, it remains the leading cause of death for young children…
