Kansas Bucket Brigade program aims to reduce July Fourth fires

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Dodge City Fire Department and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office are handing out buckets to people on Monday in an attempt to cut down on the number of fires this Fourth of July.

This is part of the Bucket Brigade program, a nationwide effort that encourages people to soak used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight instead of just throwing them away.

“What happens is a lot of people grab their used fireworks, throw them in their trash cans, and the heat on those fireworks is still present,” said Lance Feyh, a spokesman for the fire marshal’s office. “And too many times they start igniting the trash cans, and they start fires.”

He said the fires often start small but can spread into homes, especially when they break out while people are asleep…
