Heat wave returns as several Wichita suburb school districts head back to class

Several Wichita area public school districts will be opening their 2026-27 school years next week under a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service that extends to portions of central to southeast Kansas for Saturday through Friday.

The next chance of rain for Wichita is Wednesday evening through Friday. Some of those storms could be strong, and heavy rains are possible, the NWS says.

Heat indices are expected to be in the 102 to 104 degree range for the broader area under the hazardous weather outlook Saturday afternoon and early evening, with the high temperature in Wichita expected to top out at 97.
