Railroad repairs in Cowley County to create 40-mile detour

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Drivers traveling to and from Cowley and Sedgwick counties via Kansas Highway 15 will need to find an alternate route.

Starting Wednesday, K-15 will be closed at the railroad crossing just before U.S. Highway 77 in Cowley County. The Kansas Department of Transportation said Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will repair the crossing.

The closure creates a roughly 40-mile detour to get to and from Winfield. The detour diverts drivers from K-15 to Kansas Highway 55, to U.S. Highway 81, then to U.S. Highway 160 to reach U.S. 77.

While county roads can avoid the long detour, not all are paved or designed to handle commercial traffic…
