Woman tricked into stopping for fallen man has car stolen

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita woman thought she was doing the right thing when she saw a man lying in the road and stopped her car. But police say it was a trick, and the man took the woman’s car.

It happened shortly after noon on Friday near Central and Topeka in downtown Wichita.

The woman told police she was driving east on Central when she saw the man in the middle of the road.

“She stopped her vehicle to help this individual,” Lt. Todd Ojile, Wichita Police Department, said. “There was a couple of other witnesses by him. When she walked up to the male, the male jumped up off the ground, ran to her vehicle. At that point, she tried to stop them, but he took off, knocking her down to the ground.”

EMS arrived and took the 63-year-old victim to the hospital to be checked for minor leg injuries.

Police have a description and tag number on the car and are looking for it and the man. We have contacted the WPD to get the status of the witnesses who were by the man during the crime.
