Free native trees given to Wichitans who cut down invasive pear trees

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Kansas Forest Service is giving out free native trees in Wichita to get rid of an invasive species.

Tuesday was the first day of the Kansas Forest Service’s “Callery Pear Buyback” program. Callery pear trees are considered an invasive species because they choke out plants that grow naturally in Kansas.

Anyone who got rid of a Callery pear, and provided proof, was able to receive a free native tree from the forest service as a replacement. Callery pear trees, along with its cultivars, ‘Bradford,’ ‘Cleveland Select’ and ‘Aristocrat’ were all eligible for the program…
