School board to vote Wednesday on $284M budget; 101 positions will be cut

ELKTON — The Cecil County Board of Education is expected to vote Wednesday on a $284 million budget for the next school year.

Denise Sopa, chief financial officer for Cecil County Public Schools, said this is a $7.1 million increase over the current budget.

Sopa said the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future is driving much of the budget. The Blueprint, which was passed by the Maryland General Assembly in 2021, increases funding for schools in need but also gives each school system obligations to improve curriculum with a focus on college and career readiness, while also considering each student’s native language, socioeconomic status, learning challenges and access to basic needs…
