Showdown over water shutoffs in Wilmington

Wilmington City Council at Thursday’s meeting will consider a vote to override Mayor John Carney’s recent veto of an ordinance to prevent water shutoffs to certain households for non-payment.

Carney said Wednesday he stands by the veto.

Earlier Wednesday, City Councilwoman Shané Darby hosted a news conference to urge support for overriding the Mayor’s veto. According to Darby, the measure would not forgive debt, and it would not eliminate responsibility.

“What this legislation says is that if a household includes a senior, a person living with a disability, or children under the age of five – and who meets income requirements – the city should not disconnect their water while continuing to pursue collections through the many other legal tools already available,” Darby said…
