A Massachusetts man convicted of second-degree murder for the death of his 2-year-old son has been granted parole after serving 42 years in prison.
Richard Mayes was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after a jury trial in Berkshire Superior Court in November 1983, according to parole documents.
Mayes has stood in front of the Parole Board seven times since his conviction, ultimately being denied until the most recent decision June 22 after a hearing January 13. The initial denied hearing was in 1998, followed by Mayes waiving his 2003 review hearing and being denied parole again at hearings in 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2023…
