SELCO highlights local career opportunities

SHREWSBURY — Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Operations (SELCO) has expanded its outreach efforts in local schools, participating in a variety of events designed to inspire students to explore meaningful careers right in their hometown.

As a municipally owned light plant (MLP), SELCO represents a unique model of public power. Unlike investor-owned utilities, MLPs are community-owned and locally controlled, allowing them to respond quickly to customer needs and deliver reliable, high-quality service. This structure also provides greater flexibility to invest in renewable energy initiatives and develop energy efficiency programs tailored to the specific goals of the community. Because they operate as non-profits, MLPs prioritize people over profits, creating opportunities for employees to directly serve their neighbors.

SELCO staff recently participated in career-focused events at Shrewsbury High School, where students were introduced to careers in energy, IT, linework, engineering, and fiber broadband. SELCO also joined the Oak Middle School Career Fair, where lineworkers and fiber technicians met with students in small breakout sessions. Students selected areas of interest and heard directly from professionals about their day-to-day responsibilities, required training, and career journeys.
