James Island residents urge SCDOT to remove tree blocking traffic view, citing safety risk

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) — For some residents of Fort Johnson Estates on James Island, pulling out of the neighborhood has become a daily stressor because they say a large tree trunk blocks their view of oncoming traffic.

Neighbors have made numerous reports to the South Carolina Department of Transportation asking for the tree to be removed, arguing it creates a traffic and safety hazard at the stop sign where drivers turn onto Fort Johnson Road.

“You got to look right. You got to look left, and you better look right again, said Mike Semken, a James Island resident, “because a car can be behind that big tree and be on you before you even have a chance to make a move.”

Semken said drivers stopped at the sign cannot see traffic coming from the right unless they move farther into the road. He said the situation is stressful for drivers and creates a safety risk for pedestrians…
