RALEIGH — North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey on Thursday, July 23, announced the arrest of Matthew Stewart Edwards, 35, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, on felony charges of insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense.
Special agents with the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division allege that Edwards attempted to defraud Progressive Premier Insurance Co. of Illinois by submitting a claim for $2,010.33 related to a hit-and-run crash reported June 6 on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh.
According to investigators, damage to Edwards’ 2013 Volkswagen Passat occurred before he obtained an insurance policy using a Rocky Mount post office box as his address. Investigators also determined that the vehicle’s previous owner had already filed an insurance claim for the same damage…
