A 145-mile line of looming 200 foot tall steel towers marching across the mountains and deserts like the alien tripods in H.G. Wells’s “War of the Worlds,” whose purpose is to transmit power to the rest of California—i.e. not serve San Diego county. What’s not to like?
Apparently quite a lot of San Diego County residents have formed a negative opinion the Golden Pacific Powerlink and 500-kilovolt transmission line towers the size of mini-skyscrapers, and the right-of-way elbowing through the wilderness, with a completion date of 2032. Plus the fact that although San Diego ratepayers will pay 9 percent of the cost of this $2.3 billion project, they won’t get any of the power.
Although Palomar Mountain isn’t the “preferred site” for the 140 mile 500 kv transmission line between Imperial County and Temecula, it remains a possible alternative site, an SDG&E representative explained at the annual meeting of the Palomar Mountain Planning Association, Saturday, May 23 at the Palomar Mountain Fire Department.
