Aging building, uncertain future: Lucas County jail at a crossroads

On a plastic fold-out table on the second floor of the Lucas County Corrections Center sits a scaled-down model of the jail made entirely out of cardboard.

It has a front lawn, bushes, a wheelchair-accessible ramp, and, off to the side, a police cruiser.

The stairs are adorned with a red ribbon — inmates held their very own ribbon-cutting ceremony when they completed the project. Cutouts of the corrections officers who helped build the cardboard jail are glued to the front, one stationed at every door. Sitting on top of a cardboard garbage can is a black cat officers see around the jail from time to time…
