Nothing cures an ailing program like success.
After a solid tenure with Iowa Men’s Basketball, Fran McCaffery was fired in March 2025 and replaced by Drake head coach Ben McCollum. Following one of the best and most underrated head coaching hires in college basketball, the Hawkeye program went from barely achieving a .500 record during the 2024-2025 season to an improbable Elite 8 run in McCollum’s first season. McCollum did things we hadn’t seen since the 1980s when Dr. Tom Davis was in charge, and the program’s success has placed them firmly in the mix for some top prospects.
Iowa will get an official visit from 2027 five-star Jalen Davis this fall
Even though nothing has materialized yet, the Hawkeyes have been in play for multiple five-star prospects, something that wasn’t the case under McCaffery. McCollum’s aggressive, but calculated recruiting style has paid off, and now the program could earn a commitment from one of the top guards in the 2027 class.
