Propane barbecue caused Foster City condo fire that displaced dozens; community rallies to help victims

(KRON) — A propane barbecue on the deck of a first-floor unit caused the fire that destroyed a Foster City condominium building and displaced dozens of residents, fire officials said Wednesday.

Officials determined the grill sparked Sunday’s blaze, which heavily damaged the building and forced residents from their homes.

Fire crews will continue monitoring the structure for hot spots to prevent any rekindling. Officials also warned the building remains at risk of collapse and are urging people to stay away from the area.

As displaced residents begin the long recovery process, the community has stepped up to help.Students at Hillsdale High School organized a clothing drive after learning that at least three classmates lost their homes in the fire just weeks before the start of the school year.

“It’s really important because some of the people are elderly and some of them are students at Hillsdale,” senior Phoebe Lin said. “School is starting really soon, and having to lose everything at such an inconvenient time is just awful.”…
