California’s state superintendent on Monday rejected an appeal by the Sacramento City Unified School District, while warning the Sacramento County Office of Education that the state could intervene if the county makes decisions that worsen the district’s financial problems.
The letters, written by California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond to district Superintendent Cancy McArn and county office Superintendent David Gordon, follow the Sacramento City Unified’s appeal last week of a county office’s decision to rescind an agreement between the district and its teachers union, bringing the dispute over the district’s nearly $222 million deficit to the state level.
