A car turning onto Thorndike Street from Revere Street in Revere slammed into an oncoming moped Monday afternoon, sending the 28-year-old rider flipping through the air before he landed hard on his back. Police say the crash happened just before 4 p.m., and the moped driver was rushed to the hospital but is expected to be okay.
The driver of the car, 33-year-old Joshua Cordova of Prosper, Texas, was issued a criminal motor vehicle citation for failure to yield at an intersection, according to police cited by WHDH 7News. He was not arrested at the scene, and he declined medical attention and stayed put while officers investigated. Surveillance video obtained by the station from two angles shows the moped rider being struck just as the car’s airbags deployed.
Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 89, Section 8, a driver making a left turn across oncoming traffic must yield the right of way to any approaching vehicle until the turn can be completed with reasonable safety, according to Gavagan Law, LLC. That statute forms the legal basis for the citation issued against Cordova.

Witnesses ran out of a nearby store after hearing the crash, and business owner Anthony Tammaro said the impact sounded like a big explosion out front, sending his customers running outside.
