Former OHSU Health CEO sues for $15.5 million, says he was fired for speaking up

Oregon Health & Science University’s former health system chief executive is suing the university for $15.5 million, alleging OHSU fired him after he raised concerns about patient safety, discrimination and the use of public money.

Tarek Salaway, who was ousted from his $1.4 million-a-year job in April after less than four months as CEO of OHSU Health, gives his most detailed account yet of the turmoil behind his firing in a lawsuit filed last week in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

OHSU has said it fired Salaway over “professional and communication concerns,” not serious misconduct. OHSU President Dr. Shereef Elnahal in April called Salaway’s earlier claims about patient safety and workplace culture “universally false.”…
