Background
On January 26th, the Chelsea Police Department responded to a call from the local Goodwill store about the discovery of a possible human skull within donated clothing. The skull was collected and transported to the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s office. After examining the skull, the Medical Examiner’s office believes that the skull is human and has sent it to the Anthropology Department at the University of Michigan for further examination.

“The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner with assistance from the University of Michigan Anthropology Department has concluded the following. The skull that was discovered at a Goodwill store in Chelsea is believed to have come from an African American Female, and the estimated age at the time of death was between 20 and 49 years of age. It is unknown at this time how long ago the person passed away.
“The skull is well-preserved, skeletonized, dry, and there are traces of adherent soil on it. There are no signs of trauma to the skull, and no indications that it was used as a medical or teaching specimen…
