Back-to-school vaccination requirements in NYC

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — With the new school year fast approaching, families should make sure their students are up-to-date with required immunizations.

In New York City, children ages 2 months to 18 years who enter or attend childcare, public school, or private school are required to be vaccinated against certain diseases.

“Vaccinations are safe, effective tools and an important part of keeping our students and school communities healthy and ready to learn as we begin a new school year. NYC Public Schools encourages families to review their children’s immunization records and make sure all required vaccinations and health forms are up to date before the first day of school,” said a spokesperson for NYC Public Schools.

All students

  • The DTaP (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis)
  • Poliovirus
  • MMR (measles-mumps-rubella)
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B

Children under 5 enrolled in child care and pre-kindergarten

  • Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b)
  • PCV (pneumococcal conjugate)
  • Influenza (flu) – Children must receive the flu vaccine by the end of December for the current school year. It becomes available in early fall.

Children in grades 6-12

  • The Tdap booster (by grade 6)
  • MenACWY (meningococcal conjugate) by grade 7

There may be a medical exemption if your child has a specific health condition where a vaccine may be harmful. Print the medical request for immunization exemption form and have it filled out by a New York State-licensed medical doctor or an osteopathic doctor…
