ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque is making some big moves to create a dent in the affordable housing crisis, with a new initiative aimed at building hundreds of new units.

On Zuni near San Pedro, the city is redeveloping the old Shriners property into 40 to 100 affordable rental units, and this is just the beginning. The city said they’re also taking RFPs for two other opportunities, because they recognize affordable housing is a critical need right now.
“Looking at the city’s housing needs assessment from 2024, if you go back the last ten years, there’s been a continuing growth for affordable housing of about 162 units per year on average,” City of Albuquerque Deputy Director of Housing Joseph Barela said. “So ensuring we have a continuing pipeline of housing projects moving forward certainly helps put the dent in the market.”…
