BERNALILLO — A little bit of rain couldn’t dampen the feeling or celebration Monday morning in Bernalillo.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Mayor Jack Torres said of the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Donato Sanchez Fire Station #1. The $10 million project, funded by the state through capital outlay funds, is a combination of a renovation of the former Roosevelt Elementary School for the firemen’s quarters and new construction for the fire engines.
“For me, a part of the excitement of this project is that we’re bringing back another piece of this campus to life. Bernalillo is a very historic place,” he said. “When we can take a facility that’s still in reasonably good shape and repurpose it and bring it back to life, that’s just a plus. … It just speaks to things that we had in the past that we don’t have to let go of, things that we can hold onto for generations going forward.”
