Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A man accused of attacking a New Mexico EMT during an ambulance ride will stay in custody through his trial. The district attorney’s office says Kel Avena, 35, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery on a health care worker, and evidence tampering. The stabbing happened Feb. 18 as the EMT was providing medical care while en route to Gila Regional Medical Center. Authorities say the EMT was able to escape, and help arrived shortly after.
