Friday morning forecast: Prepare for high winds this weekend

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – We will still be breezy for your Friday, just not as breezy as yesterday.

Winds will pick up this afternoon; wind gusts up to 20-30 MPH for most, with a few spots getting up to 40 MPH mainly in the Sacramento Mountains. Those fighting the Tusas Fire in San Miguel County will be battling breezy westerly winds this afternoon, which will make it difficult to contain the fire. Light smoke concentrations have pushed to the east-southeast this morning. With the westerly winds, the smoke plume will continue to spread towards the east, which could impact the air quality in areas near Las Vegas.

While we may be free from fire weather alerts being issued for the region this morning, we still need to stay fire weather safety aware as there is a low-end elevated threat for fire weather. Most of us will also see mostly sunny skies. Higher elevations could see a mix of sun and clouds. Daytime highs will raise into the 70s and 80s once again nearly statewide…
