Rio Rancho reforms benefit procurement process

RIO RANCHO — The city of Rio Rancho will exempt employee insurance, benefits, and supplemental retirement programs from its procurement code, a move officials believe will make it easier to buy such plans for its employees.

The code change will go into effect following Thursday’s approval of an ordinance by the Rio Rancho Governing Body. The code change comes as the city approaches next month’s deadline to set benefit details in place so that employees can enroll this summer.

Stephanie Yara, the city’s financial services department director, recommended the exception because health insurance providers use “sensitive health data” that is “in conflict with our normal procurement process.”…
